For many the Confederate flag is the emblem of racism and hatred dating back to the American Civil War 150 years ago. Several photographs have emerged of the gunman, Dylann Roof, holding it before he went on his murderous shooting spree. President Obama says the Confederate flag belongs in a museum yet just 180km away from the scene of the shootings… at the state house in Columbia, the Confederate Flag still flies. But what does the flag really stand for?

It is a flag and association is one placed there by others. In the UK we had a period when just flying the local flag was deemed racist – YES that was true in the over PC namby pamby liberal mess and today we still have that mess but can fly our flag.

Flags are not about racism and getting rid of a flag will not solve it and however wrong racism is, it should not be used to create issues that are not there.

It is a flag, get over it. But sorry America is going thru such liberal mentalities as they did not serve the UK well.

So, flags – nothing to do with racism, solves nothing and a scapegoat for so called good people to vent upon.

Racism is bad, but in a world that labels people with passports and skin colours etc can you not just tick the ruddy human box and move on. Abusing flags, just pathetic.

Hey you guys remember about the controversial event that happened in our school about the pledge the "patriots" gathered up in their trucks and took the largest Confederate flag they could find and raised them as high as they could while saying "we speak English here" on one of the dozen trucks, I really wanted to move after that day

Well you never do see it associated with peace groups now do ya? You never see the KKK flying the American flag when they burn a cross.

I laugh at the retards that sport around the confederate flag thinking their bad ass. If you own a confederate flag you have immediately branded yourself as a redneck.

Never heard more nonsense in my life. Of course the BBC would interview some biased northern yankee on the issue.

Abe Lincoln was a racist, and white supremacist – Fact.
The north decimated the south through war – Fact.
The north practised slavery too, albeit to a lesser extent – Fact.

Abraham Lincoln, 1858 – "I will say then that I am not, nor ever have been in favor of bringing about in anyway the social and political equality of the white and black races – that I am not nor ever have been in favor of making voters or jurors of negroes, nor of qualifying them to hold office, nor to intermarry with white people; and I will say in addition to this that there is a physical difference between the white and black races which I believe will forever forbid the two races living together on terms of social and political equality. And inasmuch as they cannot so live, while they do remain together there must be the position of superior and inferior, and I as much as any other man am in favor of having the superior position assigned to the white race. I say upon this occasion I do not perceive that because the white man is to have the superior position the negro should be denied everything.”

I'm no expert on the history of the civil war, but from what I know: The south depended upon slavery for it's inferior economy to the north. The south was and still is largely agricultural, slavery was a fact of life, unfortunately. The north was an increasingly-industrial powerhouse, generating more wealth and power. This shows when you compare the equipment northerners and southerners used at the battle of Gettysburg. The north however still practised slavery, they aren't immune to this historical fact. And their leaders were never in favour of social equality for the African people. Abraham Lincoln was said to have wanted all Africans to be peacefully deported by ships back to Africa. This is well documented.

The way I see it: The north were hypocritical warmongers led by a White supremacist tyrant. The south were fighting for their freedom, their independence, which was totally constitutional, albeit to keep slavery, as they depended on that economically. The north didn't want an expansion of slavery into the western states, they saw this as an increasing economic problem for them. Northerners cared about slavery, but not about the slaves. They were more racist than those in the south; and this flag, is just a flag. It's a part of the south's heritage so it should stay up.

The Confederate flag is a symbol of traitors and white supremacists. May that flag rot and burn in the burning trash heap where it belongs.

Even if you don't think it is racist (which it is) and you want to honor your ancestors, the fact is your ancestors fought against the Union. That makes it the flag of traitors and should not be flown if you appreciate the current USA.

Equating the Confederate Flag to the English Flag is ridiculous, especially when proceeding to compare it to Nazism. The English Flag is nothing remotely similar to either of them. Aside from that, this was very interesting and informative.

Wow seriously what is it with all this bullshit about people having to stop flying whatever damned flags they want just because some 9 black americans happen to have just been murdered by a white american? Sadly, lots of americans get murdered all the time and if you really have to bring race into it then you should be aware that black americans have been murdering hundreds of white americans every single day for many years now and the politically correct world media haved repressed reporting about it or have simply told us that it is acceptable because of "affirmative action" and that whites deserve it because of all those hundreds of years of slavery! In the time it has taken me to type this I guarantee that at least 50 white female americans have been raped and murdered by black americans, but will you hear the press talking about it? Hell no, that'd be like "racism n shit"….
