I can't believe how many people are totally ignorant of history. The vast majority of Confederate soldiers did not own slaves and weren't fighting to protect slavery. Likewise, the vast majority of Union soldiers weren't fighting to end slavery. The southerners were defending their states against northern aggression and the northerners were fighting to preserve the Union. Both were noble causes that had nothing to do with racism and southerners should be proud of their flag and the people who fought and died for it. The Confederate flag became a racist symbol when the KKK adopted it after the war. But let's not forget that the KKK also considered themselves a Christian organization and prominently displayed the cross. They have no more right to claim the Confederate flag than they do the cross and people should realize this.

I don't care what the Confederate flag stood for. The US flag is no better and probably even worse. We cry foul when they infringe upon our rights, but we do the same thing? We are always preaching how they try and erase our history, so I guess we're going to do the same? Our children out here dying at a high rate and we're worried about a flag? It doesn't change one darn thing and no victory has been won, Hell they already lost the war. If I was white I swear I would go buy the biggest Confederate flag money could buy and put in my front yard. And dare one of you S.O.B's too take it down. All this tit for tat, pointing fingers, and race baiting needs to stop. History has been made there is no changing it.

Really? So its the Confederate battle flag, used solely in battle that offends people? Not the Confederate National flag that was flown thru the Southern states. Many colored men also fought and died for this Confederacy battle flag.
Why is it the more recent generation who is still alive and lived thru, Selma, segregation, rights, marcom x, martin luther king etc. and No one is offended by the US flag that has flown the whole time. I just find sickening that this flag is abused by hate groups. And it shouldn't be blamed on those who treasure it as history and part of their life. Its just the same as Stolen Valor. But seriously people, they need to exit the tunnel vision you see in and realize what the hell things are before passing judgement

if anything the removal of this flag will cause more and more blacks to be shot by extremists and more of these flags being flown by the same extremist. This isn't helping any kind of problem its only going to make it worse.

Good for Governor Haley. The time has come and she is the leader to make it happen. America is for everybody and equally so, and that includes every square inch of this land, including every square inch below the Maxon-Dixon Line. Regards from Florida.

The Civil War like the Revolutionary War was about economics and taxation i.e. balance of power in the federal government. Furthermore, we could not even get the US Constitution ratified to form a constitutional republic without the 3/5 Compromise, and later kicking the can down the road withthe Missouri Compromise, and Compromise of 1850. Remember, by the 1860s the can had been kicked down the road for almost 100 years, and the Republicans controlled the Executive branch and half (House of Representatives) the Legislature branch with a lock on the Judicial branch. It was only the Senate left for the Democrats toblock UNCONSTITUTIONAL laws by the North to benefit the Northern economy i.e. the MorrillTariff. Once the radicalRepublican wing of the party violated these compromises this end the balance in the Senateof Freevs Slave States entering the Union. The South beingan agricultural economycould not survive without slaves; however, the North being an industrial based economy would thrive under the tidal wave of immigrants and unfair advantage over the South. Therefore, the Confederate Battle Flag to me is a symbol of independence and freedom, and the brave men who honorably fought and died to protect and preserveour Constitutional Republic against anoppressive, tyrannical federal government. I won't go into the actual diversity that made up the CSA, or the countless deeds of love and kindness that theSouthern gave the Negro Slaves, or the fact it was brutal times in our history, and even White soldiers and sailor suffered the exact same treatment as the slaves. Even Jesus was scourged, tortured, and killed wasn't he people? We are all AMERICANS!!!

She doesn't even explain the reason why it needs to be removed. Just one more politician bowing down to people who are upset. Removing this flag has done nothing to make racism go away. It's a token gesture from white guilt politicians to the perpetually offended.
