England surely had more shoots which were close, but I don't think England outplayed Japan. Japan just didn't play good enough like last two games because English players were pressing Japanese players well to not control in the mid field. But in last 15 minutes or so, Japan started dominating as English players got tired and that own goal happened.

With the way England played so far, England has a good chance to beat Germany for the third spot.

Yikes. I was actually rooting for England, because I wanted to them to face our girls in the final. A good ol' fashion US vs UK final would have been great. What a heart wrenching way to lose.
Usually, I find that soccer is extremely boring to watch, but I love watching the US Women's team play. They are just superb.
Anyway, I hope England's soccer team ladies aren't taking it too hard. They played really well.

England FLOPPED to scored the penalty and no one was upset about that!? Bad sportsmanship at the end. Bias Reporting. England deserved to lose.

England's team played, indeed, like lions – one of the best games I've ever seen – real team play here, you could feel them rise to help each other and push forward…found myself shouting at the screen 'Go on…go on…' Individual play is great, but team work is something wonderful unto itself – well done you sweet, courageous, magnificent Lions of England! Now get Germany done!

why focus and sympathize with the losers? The article should be about Japan kicking their tails. Good Job Japan, you WON ! We like stories about champions and hilarious endings like scoring for the other team! LMAO!!! !

Lol. I remember watching my first men's world cup in 2010. England keeper misses an easy ball to let USA score a goal. Heard they are notorious with doing horrendous in world cups. Ostensibly now it's for both England's men and women team! Also I expect Germany to make them even more sadder

i was hoping England, after taking out Norway and Canada, would make it against Germany to get their ass kicked. Sadly Germany lost so I was hoping for Japan. All the same it was quite the ending. My heart went out to this English girl.May she have the support of England. Hopefully Englandwill be proud of their 4th place finish on Saturday after their bronze game against Germany.

Lot of nonsense here…look at the stats at the FIFA stats..outplayed is when you win with 3-0 or more…England needed a large amounts of fouls , a penalty which was no penalty and a fake injury by their GK to disrupt the Japanese pace.. that own goal was the result of the pressure of a great attack..
The Americans invited by Fox News only show that the've been bad losers from 2011 and today…..

HORRIBLE BIASED COVERAGE! You should be ashamed of this coverage. A group of certain people bummed out cuz the Asians won. So obvious and shallow. JAPAN WON and you gove them ZERO credit?! Japan outplayed them easily, and all you have to do is look at the freakin score! #whitemedia #whitepriv

Suck it up, It is a game, I know it sucks, but stuff happens. They did great, but like Columbia, years ago, it happened, move on.

Two things, firstly the Japanese team should be sending Laura Bassett flowers every year for the rest of her life in gratitude for her own goal and securing the Japanese a place in the final.
Secondly these soccer commentators talk out of the side of their mouth. None of them have ever played goalie. These people seem to think that the goalie is a ceremonial position. It is not. Lalas at 1.11 says that one has to make the tackle. That is simply not true by long shot. Any goalie worth his or her salt is like the immovable brick wall that stops anything from getting past him or her. That is also why they get paid the big bucks. It would have been nice if Bassett were in position to make such a tackle, but as it is, she is an idiot for making such a tackle out of position.

Lady commentator in white dress, what game were you watching? England's possession was about 40% with 19 fouls against Japan 60% with only 9 fouls.England ladiesdid their best but they did not outplay Japan. Very biased.

Such a shitty biased coverage!! Japanese players showed their toughness and creative tactics till the end while English got tired. Look at that Kawasumi's perfect cross ball that led to the own goal. No mention of it?
