My theory.
Dick Grayson was in the Wayne Building when the shit went down. He's dead. With the "You let your family die" thing, they are setting up Red Hood in the solo Batman film. I can see that happening. The Robin suit is obviously Jason Todd's, and the Joker is the one who killed him. He's pissed at Batman for letting him die and letting Dick die. Also, this is an older Batman. He's later in his career as the Dark Knight in the film's continuity. Red Hood is popular right now. What if Red Hood sent him that newspaper, taunting him, and that's the set up for him as the villain in the next Batman movie. Batman is like, oh shit, I have to deal with this… in the next movie…
In the Dark Knight Returns Batman quits because of Jason's death. So maybe that will tie in to why Batman's been laying low?
