New Horizons was designed and built here in Maryland, at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL). It's the first mission to the Kuiper Belt, a gigantic zone of icy bodies and mysterious small objects orbiting beyond Neptune. This region also is known as the “third” zone of our solar system, beyond the inner rocky planets and outer gas giants. It doesn't have the fuel to slow down, so it will just be doing a close fly-by tomorrow as it passes by Pluto.
"The Year of Pluto" – NASA New Horizons Documentary June 12, 2015: New Horizons is the first mission to the Kuiper Belt, a gigantic zone of icy bodies and mysterious small objects orbiting beyond Neptune. This region also is known as the “third” zone of our solar system, beyond the inner rocky planets and outer gas giants. Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) in Maryland, designed, built and operates the New Horizons spacecraft, and manages the mission for NASA’s Science Mission Directorate in Washington. "The Year of Pluto: NASA New Horizons" is a one hour documentary which takes on the hard science and gives us answers to how the mission came about and why it matters.
Interviews with Dr. James Green, John Spencer, Fran Bagenal, Mark Showalter and others share how New Horizons will answer many questions. New Horizons is part of the New Frontiers Program, managed by NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama.

Greetings from Russia, americans may be proud of themselves and their advantages, it is completely their mission, unseen before. These distances and scales! Just wow, operate the station from a distance of some 6 bil. km!
Hurrah for good old USA tech know-how and ingenuity. The fact that we can do this, and similar missions like the Curiosity Mars rover, brings me great pride. I'll get flamed for this, but compare this mission with that of most other countries. whose primary "mission" is to build crude atomic weapons or subjugate their neighbors with machine guns mounted on Toyota trucks; there is no comparison. We (the USA) have freely shared data from deep space probes, Hubble, and many others, for the advancement of science and mankind.

SQUEE!!! I am so excited that I may not be able to sleep tonight.
I remember seeing the launch in 2006 and wondering what it would be like in 2015. I'm mostly disappointed woith the way things are, but I am sure that what the probe reveals will not disappoint.
who the freakin hell do not want to be an astronomers in future generations? we almost know anything about earth but we known less than 5 percent about space and beyond. am i right or am i very right? lol
July 14 is gonna be awesome!!

This was a wonderful video. Thanks NASA.

Great documentary about the New Horizons mission. NASA launched this spacecraft on January 19, 2006! It will reach Pluto on July 14, 2015!

Vivemos tempos entusiasmantes!…
Pluto !
Seriously, ONE HOUR LONG? C'mon NASA!
Does it have a decent camera? or the same black and white garbage webcam as Dawn.
Great mission.

Shame they did not try to put the probe into orbit around Pluto. That would have been pretty damned spiffy.

The Year of Pluto. An hour-long documentary worth watching as we wait for the New Horizons fly-by in two days. #plutoflyby
