My best friend's grandfather, the late Paul Tulloh, swam with Duke and Johnny W. (Tarzan) for the U.S. Olympic team. He used to talk story. He was the first manager of a Safeway grocery store in Honolulu. He used to hang out and share drinks with da boys. He was the youngest guy to swim the San Francisco channel for a long time. Without a wetsuit. He was a paperboy during the big earthquake in S.F., and he became a millionaire in the stock market back when a million was like a billion today. He lost it all in the 70's and went back to work as a butcher, but kept his Rolls Royce. His poodles trashed that beautiful interior. He used to hang at the key with Buster Crabb, the actor. His daughter, Bev, my friend's mom, was the most attractive woman I've seen in my 62 years on this planet. Paul's best stories were about the Barbary Coast in San Francisco, a red light district. I never laughed so hard in my life. It was an honor to know him, and hear about the Duke from him.
watch my video Is John Severson part 1 and part 2 to see how I discovered that my father might be one of the biggest names in surf history and how he responded to my request for the truth.
I used to see the Duke walk past me as a kid at the Waikiki Yacht Club. He used to dress to the 9's in an all white suit. He looked totally amazing. I knew who he was, and was in awe, but I wished that I had walked up and sad hello. Truly a great man.
