For a non us citizen columbus day is strange because it has nothing to do with the US as a state and he was quite an asshole when he landed in the americas. When you want to celebrate the dicovery of the continent have a viking day (also sounds better)!
In germany corpus christi (fronleichnam) is a holiday with a day off but only hardcore christians actually celebrate it. Almost all holidays where you get a day off are religious… the day of the reunion is one of the few history related

National coming out day is pretty gay pun intended haha. Presidents day is also pretty dumb I think people in the government wanted a random day off.

mother fucking Columbus day… that day always comes on the exact monday that i get payed on… there is no fucking reason for there to be a fucking holiday for motherfucking columbus… yes he discovered our homeland but i mean really there is no reason the banks should be closed…

Most of the national holidays were moved to Mondays because of a law to structure off days for employees, so many holidays, like President's birthdays, aren't historically accurate, which is dumb.

Sweetest Day and Valentine's Day are both pretty silly holidays but the idea is nice. Labor Day makes no sense since all but the Government and Banks actually have to work on that day which is crummy. Easter is a weird one since we're a Secular Country and it's obviously not a Secular Holiday. We stole Christmas back so it's cool and 4th of July is a good one. Christmas, Thanksgiving, New Years, 4th of July and Halloween would be the ones I'd keep if I got to ban holidays.

I would encourage you to attend a flag day ceremony. I participate in them annually as a member of the VFW color guard. Its generally held by the BPOE(elks) and open to the public.
