Last Week Tonight's John Oliver opened his show with a look back at this week's news, starting with the massacre in Charleston, South Carolina, and how terribly depressing it was to listen to President Obama discuss that fact that absolutely nothing was going to be done about our gun laws in the wake of another shooting.

Oliver moved onto the outrage that's been expressed over the fact that South Carolina is still flying the Confederate flag at the state capitol, and politicians like Lindsey Graham who have been twisting themselves in knots trying to defend the fact that it's still there.

After taking a shot at the state for their law that won't allow for the flag to be lowered, much less removed, Oliver had a suggestion for what South Carolina, or any other state still flying the Confederate flag could do with it.

Take it down and get rid of it!!http://petitions.moveon.org/sign/remove-the-confederate-3

To those bickering that "the Confederate Flag is Heritage", think about this. The flag that is most commonly flown is the battle flag used by the Army of North Virginia, and was never adopted by the Confederate Congress. Three flags were chosen to represent the Confederacy; the National flags included the "Stars and Bars", the "Stainless Banner", and the "Blood Stained Banner". The first flag was confused with the American Flag during battles, so P. G. T. Beauregard brought forth to the congress, "There needs to be two flags… [A National] flag to be flown during peace and parade, and one to be flown in hate a war." Though this idea was accepted, the battle flag never passed a true national flag, and was used for the purpose of war. It was used a flag cantor for the "Stainless Banner" and "Blood Stained Banner". I believe that if we would fly the official flags used by the Confederate States of America, we wouldn't adopt the "hate filled rag" that is the battle flag.

You will only turn it into a symbol of defiance. Every troll in the world will adopt it just to piss you all off.
