Actually this isn't a paddleboard the Duke is riding. It's an Australian surf ski (or an early version of it). These early versions had a flat top rather than a cockpit but they were still designed to sit on but he chose to stand on it after paddling into the wave.
That was awesome! Duke was a legend!! I travel to Hawaii alot and I dig the statue of Duke at the beach along Kalakaua Ave. I love everything about Hawaii, including the people.
Thanks Roy,
I think where the film fades off at 2:58, right after that the 'Duke' has a Wahine climb on his shoulders. I have seen that in other video.
I like at 3:30 where there are three people on the same board before the wave leaves them behind. Also, At 3:50 where the one person steps onto the board on the right and then there are two on the same board. Then both jump off.
Ah!! Those were the days….

There is a tribute to Duke at Huntington Beach in the Duke's Restaurant, a statue across the street in front of HSS and a bust with an exhibit at the International Surfing Museum a couple of block inland from there.
