Reading these comments, I'm disgusted. If this was an American shooting, you wouldn't like stereotypical American comments, would you? Show some respect. The Irish students having alcohol has nothing to do with it. The balcony should be able to support as many people as it can fit – it's poor infrastructure at fault, not the students. Show some respect for crying out loud.
If you look at some of the pictures of the balcony you can tell the protruding joist are rotted. They probably didn't use treated lumber it appears they also encased the framework which could cause it to retain moisture, and rot. Even treated lumber can rot if it doesn't have adequate ventilation.

It is a sad day for the City of Berkley and the people who's put this cheap inferior building materials into a building, where young innocent ,kids would be living. Any person who has a heart , must say our thoughts and prayers go out to the families of these children. ONLY THE GOOD DIE YOUNG. AND TO THOSE PEOPLE WHO POSTED THE NASTY COMMENTS, I SAY, AGAIN ONLY THE GOOD DIE YOUNG. and to prove it ,if you were any good you would be dead along time ago. The light of Heaven to those children who passed to and may god give the injured a speedy recovery.

Too young to die, Lord have mercy on their souls and we pray for their parents and friends also for those injured.
How could they not sense that it wasn't going to collapse? A tiny balcony packed out people. Terrible tragedy, but this is for the darwin awards.
