But imagine Ronaldo, having to deal with Germany, Spain, Netherlands, Italy, France… Where as Messi has to play Paraguay, Chile,… And arguably better opponents such as Columbia, Brazil with Neymar and Uruguay with Suarez. Overall he had an excellent game in the role he was given.. which is playmaker. For quite some time now Messi has been playing playmaker for Argentina because they have always had talent in attack, up in front of goal. It clearly did not work for Argentina in the past 2 world cups and here as well. Yeah, Messi still gets the most shots off because of the amount of time the ball stays at his feet, but the others on the team simply are not playing at their best.
Alas, the time for excuses was over after the WC final defeat to Germany. There were no excuses. I'm as big a Messi fan as the next guy, but something just does not work in this setup. Is Messi the greatest player of my generation? ABSOLUTELY YES WITHOUT A SHADOW OF DOUBT. But when he plays for Argentina he just isn't the same. I think Argentina can't find the right coach to be honest… they need someone who can make them play better as a team going forward. They have seemed to fix themselves defensively in organization (thanks in large part to Mascherano's leadership), but when going forward they lack cohesion. Messi can't pull his solo runs all the time, and he uses up all his energy doing that with Barca over the course of the season. He just seems so spent post-season with his national team. Even then, he still dazzles among the rest of the players on the pitch. Plz don't bring CR7 into this, my comment is only about Messi and his success with Barca and his relative failure to win titles with Argentina.
Messi is still arguably the greatest player ever. It's not his fault that the team flops and the coach makes idiotic decisions. Martino subbed Aguero out and brought in Flopuin? No Tevez? No Garay?? Also, Messi scored the only goal in the penalty shoutout for Argentina. That's just crazy, the only goal.. Higuain fucked it up for the team, yet again. People will hate on Messi, but just remember that just because his team lost in this Copa America doesn't mean he's not one of the top 3 GOATS.
