Lots of technical details left out of this. Ie:
    -what temperature is "pasteurization"?
    – roughly, how far away from the fire did you have this bottle for boiling? For pasteurization?
    – how long did you heat the water for boiling? For Pasteurization?
    – any rules of thumb needed for how long to boil water at a certain altitude? (You know there is).

@theNewCodingFrontier You mean like BPA? well, that is always a risk, but dying of dehydration is a bigger risk that is of more of an immediate concern if you have to really resort to this method of making water safer to drink. That is why I carry a stainless steel water jug or a BPA free canteen with me on all of my outings.

I thought water in a plastic bottle will not burn unless there is no water in the bottle at which point the bottle alone will burn. >.<

No it will actually melt if you don't keep an eye on it even with water in the bottle. I have had plenty of failures because I wasn't paying attention and the bottom of the bottle heated up too much and melted enough for the whole bottom of fall out and that also put out most of my fire.
